The CEI Organization and the Conference

Caretakers of the Environment Internation (CEI) is an international network of secondary schools that are active in Environmental Education. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that organizes student and teacher conferences of environmental issues in the context of education.

The "Negev97" conference of Caretakers International will take place from the 22nd of June to the 27th of June 1997.

The unique Caretakers concept of joint students and teacher activities such as workshops, fieldtrips and social events will again serve as a framework in this year's conference.

Conference Theme

The conference theme will be:
Environment and Communication - Environmental issues as a bridge between people and nations.

Communication is an essential tool to manage spatial environmental issues, no matter where we live or what circumstances we face. There is a growing awareness of that tool in the ongoing process of sustainable development.

Midreshet Sde-Boker (Midreshet Ben Gurion) provides an ideal location for considering these issues as it includes educational and research institutes with a worldwide communication system which enables a clearer and faster understanding of environmental problems in the "Global Village".

Aims of the Conference

Location and Climate

Sde-Boker is located in an arid region.
The average temperature in the summer is 26-34 degrees celcius and the humidity is 25-60%.
The prevailing wind in this season is moderate, coming from the Mediterranean Sea in the North-West, creating comfortable conditions.
Be prepared for a hot sun. Bring with you: a hat and sun-tan lotion.

Project Presentation

The exhibition of environmental projects presented by delegates will be one of the highlights of the conference in the Caretakers tradition. A wide range of different project subjects will be presented with special attention to projects in the field of the conference theme - "Environment and Communication", or one of its subthemes. We would like you to bring your projects as a visual/poster display. Each school/delegation will have a display space of approximately 2 square meters plus a table for leaflets, etc. You will get enough time to set up your display at the beginning of the week. The exhibition will be used as a resource for conference workshops and thata doesn't mean only projects about your theme. We are looking forward to your well-prepared displays as a contribution to a very nice exhibition.
Please plan your display to be as visual as possible. Include computers, drawings, photos, writings, maps, diagrams, etc.
We would like you to send us special information about the size of your display.

Theme Group Workshops

During the daytime we will work in international workgroups in 6 subthemes, on different aspects of "Environment and Communication". Please name your preferred subject on your "delegate information sheet". We will try to match preferences. The mixed international character of workgroups will also be an important criterion while composing the groups.

See full description of theme group workshops.
