Permanent dripping spring provides water for a congenial habitat for many
desert plants.Ein Avdat's soil and water are slightly saline and the
canyon's plants have accommodated to salty conditions.
The Saltbush has adapted especially well; hairs
on its leaves absorb the salt and then fall off, allowing the plant to
survive. Salt colors this green plant with a silver sheen.
Next to the canyon wall there is an Atlantic
Pistachio tree. It is very rare to find trees of this kind at such
low altitude - only 350 meters above sea level - for they only usually
grow at double this height. Atlantic Pistachio can survive on as little
as 200 millimeters of rain per year and still produce fruit. At the top
of the waterfall is a grove of Euphrates Poplar
trees. Found across Asia and all the way to Northwest Africa, this type
of tree has taken root in only four Negev locations - yet another
indication of a once water and colder climate in Ein- Avdat. Eupharates
Poplar are especially beautiful in autumn, when they turn yellow before
shedding their leaves. The hetrogenious vegetation in the oasis comprises
many more species adopted to various habitats surrounding the water.
Among them are Reed, and Ferns on the water
fringe, Tamarax, Palms
and Secculents nearby and Caprys on the rocky walls.
