Biodiversity in a Fresh Water Environment

by Assa Baumer, High School for Environmental Studies

Main Topic:

Changes in biodiversity due to human activity near and in a body of fresh water.

Goals: Discuss environmental events that cause changes in biodiversity in freshwater.

  1. Identify the chosen site in its virgin state, its organisms as well as its biotic and a-biotic variables.

  2. Examine the changes in the biodiversity related to seasonal or environmental changes, for example: enlargement or reduction of the biodiversity or domination of one species over another, etc.

  3. Examine the changes in the fauna and flora caused by human activity.

    Assumption:

As it is impossible to compare measurements of different bodies of water in different climatic zones and achieve exact results during one academic year, an open approach should be adopted in which each participant will define his/her methods appropriate t o the chosen site.

Based on this approach the researchers may make use of:

    1. description of graphics
    2. quantitative data
    3. qualitative data

By the end of October each participant should:

    1. Select a research topic
    2. Choose a research site
    3. Describe the research site
    4. Describe the methods of research
